What To Wear For a Photo Session

With the busy lives we all lead it has never been more important to capture important memories while they last. Whether in studio or on location, I'll capture those moments in time before they slip away and I'll leave you with a memory you can keep forever.

Tips For a Great Portrait

One of the most important considerations when getting ready for a photo shoot is your choice of clothing. Planning your attire in advance will give your photographs a much more professional look. Here are some helpful guidelines:

Wear Solid Colors - Clothing with bold stripes and colorful prints can be distracting. Choose one solid color that compliments your eyes and skin tone. Dark colored clothing works well because it has a slimming effect in photographs. Avoid very light colors as they tend to not photograph well and draw attention away from your face (that's not a good thing!) Avoid clothing with writing, large graphics or bold designs.

Wear Classic Styles - Have you ever seen a photograph that was obviously taken in the 70's? Big collars, ruffled shirts, etc. Today, although maybe less obvious, there are styles that will "date" your photos later on. If you wear classic styles you will always love the photograph and they will stand the test of time.

Keep Your Make-up & Hair Style Simple - Outlandish hairdos and extreme make-up look unnatural. While this can be fun if that's what you mean to do, you should still make your choices carefully. Subtle tones in make-up and hair combed away from your face will allow your natural beauty to shine through. Groom hair carefully. We can digitally correct some minor fly-aways but the process can be time consuming and not everytihng is fixable in Photoshop. Men's faces should be freshly shaven, no amount of digital correction can remove a five o'clock shadow effectively.

V-necks & open collared shirts elongate the neck and body and tend to flatter your face. Likewise, choose sleek, close fitting clothes over baggy ones. Lay out your clothing the day before the shoot and take a careful look at the collection. If your eye goes to any one item in particular, you can be certain that the camera will too! Unless you want that item to be the main focus then you may want to reconsider it.

When posing in a group, make sure to dress everyone in complimentary colors. A group portrait should focus on your faces. Choose simple complimentary colors that flatter.

Cover your arms with long sleeves. Bare arms can be a distraction because they temd to draw attention away from the face.

Keep jewelry simple.

Schedule sessions for children at their best time of the day. When bringing children into the studio you may want to bring some of your favorite "props". Special chairs, dolls, teddy bears and toys will make for a funs session and excellent photographs. When in the studio never use the word "SMILE" with a child. Often, children will try too hard to please and end up looking uncomfortable. Trust me, we'll find ways to get wonderful and natural smiles.

Bring a change (or changes) of clothes. Unlike some photographers who limit the number of outfits you can wear to a shoot, I will never limit you to one outfit. Bring a whole suitcase of clothes if you want!

Most importantly... RELAX, RELAX, RELAX. Cameras can tell what you're thinking. Although you're preparing for a "formal" portrait session, there is nothing formal about my style. We'll have fun, some laughs, a good time and while we're at it we'll get some GREAT photographs.

If you have any questions about your specific photo shoot please give me a call. I want to make your shoot one you'll remember forever.
